A Fine Wine Story: The Goodland Tuba and Vinegar Livelihood Association
12 September 2022

Wine requires time to taste good and so does success. From collecting ingredients (primarily coconut sap), keeping it in stock, drafting, and up to the waiting process; every step is tedious to get into a fine quality state. This course somewhat mirrors the journey of a group of ‘mangtutuba’ or coconut winemakers from Barangay Quezon Jr. in Ormoc City, Leyte. Mostly farmers, they began to form and organize themselves into an association the moment they received their livelihood grant (through the Micro-Enterprise Development Track of the Sustainable Livelihood Program) last July 2021. This good initiative and collaboration gave birth to the Goodland Winery Tuba and Vinegar Livelihood Association which is now composed of 29 members.

After more than seven months of operation, the group is now considered as one of the promising associations in the city, with the goal to promote and upgrade their product especially within Ormoc City, so as to sustain the supply of ‘tuba’ or coconut wine for the consumption of the people in their community. Apart from ‘tuba’, the association also produces and sells coconut vinegar distributed in nearby towns.

With these means, the association even aspires to establish their ‘tuba’ as one of the best sources of coconut wine not just in Ormoc but extending to other places. They recognize that this can be done by having additional interventions like marketing and product development training. Also, activities such as trade fairs and caravans can further promote their products to a wider, multi-faceted market. Hence, the association is now coordinating with other concerned agencies like the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Go Negosyo Center and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to seek assistance on their plans to develop and promote the association.

It will take time, but surely the Goodland will get where they are meant to be.
