Serving The Environment: The Mallig's growing mushroom livelihood

Mallig, Isabela- From being  displaced farm-workers to a group of women engaging  to business with care for the environment. This is how these three (3) Sustainable Livelihood Program Association (SLPA) from Mallig, Isabela started.

Mallig is known for their “Nateng Festival”, an Ilocano term for vegetable. Thus, people in this municipality mainly live, eat and serve through farming.

Comprised of three (3) shelters, the oyster mushroom project creates additional income to ninety-five (95) SLP families who were trained on Mushroom Culture and Vermi Composting by the Department of Agriculture—Regional Crop Protection Center (DA-RCPC) and Municipal Agriculture Office Office of Mallig, Isabela. The lot where the production center stands was provided by the barangay. The DSWD FO2, through its Sustainable Livelihood Program provided for financial support for the conduct of the skills training. To sustain the production, they build their own mushroom laboratory where spawns are being cultured/grown.

Profit from these oyster mushroom production is an easy coming as they also sell their produce at caravans and institutional markets in the province.

Besides making money out of cultured mushrooms, the group also exercises care for the environment as they uses substrates/ waste from the farm as one of their main resources in oyster mushroom production.

To improve their skills and technology, the group is now planning to tie-up with Department of Science and Technology—Regional Office No. 2 (DOST—RO2).
