ITIKAN TUNGO SA KAUNLARAN

Libertad, Misamis Oriental - DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) in October 2015 provided a total seed capital fund of PhP1.1M to five SLP associations in Libertad, Misamis Oriental with a total of 146 members. The seed capital fund was utilized to purchase 3,700 ready-to-lay ducks and 555 drakes; to construct pens and fences; and for the installation of water and electricity supply in the farm.

The agri-business aimed to supply Mindanao’s daily demand of 450,000-500,000 duck eggs or “balut.” Currently, the duck egg farm is able to produce 2,600-3,000 eggs daily, and eggs are sold all-year-round at a uniform price to consolidators. The dung produced from the farm, which undergoes monthly sanitation inspection, are also sold to farmers for PhP5.00 per sack.

The farm now earns an average daily income of PhP 20,000; and the person-in-duty earns PhP0.20 per egg, or an average of PhP560 per day. As of February 2017, the association’s cash in bank is PhP205,387.73.  Each member of the association receive profit share of about PhP1,300—depending on their attendance—every six months.

Members of the associations—97% of which are women— say their self-confidence, interpersonal skills, and financial literacy increased, because of the establishment of the duck egg farm which significantly provided them livelihood and additional income. It has also encouraged them to pursue their own duck breeding business.

“Wala pa ang itlog ni bibe, kwarta na para kay mommy!”

The association now plans to purchase an incubator to increase their supply, and to explore the production of meat products from culls.
